In Hobart, Tasmania, a design-build project is marking an architectural milestone by shaping the world’s first oval stadium with a wooden roof . Set to become a benchmark in sustainable stadium design, Macquarie Point Stadium is set to seat up to 23,000 spectators, with its glulam structure set to be one of its main features.
Design of the first oval stadium with a wooden roof
The design of Macquarie Point Stadium has been conceived to be a model of innovation and functionality. The stadium’s oval structure is designed to provide a clear, unobstructed view from every point , maximising the experience for fans. The laminated timber roof, which covers the playing field, is aesthetically striking and is also designed to be extremely durable and sustainable.
The stadium’s woven wood façade reinforces its connection to nature and the local ecology. In addition, the roof incorporates translucent ETFE pads that allow natural light to enter, contributing to energy efficiency and creating a more comfortable environment for visitors.

The stadium’s integration into Hobart’s cityscape is another notable feature, with steps taken to ensure the building does not disrupt the harmony of its surroundings but rather blends seamlessly into them. The roof, which reaches 51 metres at its highest point , will use locally sourced timber, underlining the project’s commitment to sustainability and responsible management of forest resources.
An economic challenge and an opportunity for Tasmania
The stadium was initially budgeted at A$775 million , but economic experts suggest the total cost could exceed A$1 billion due to unforeseen events. However, Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff is defending the project as a key investment for the local economy, highlighting the potential to transform the Hobart urban area and attract tourism and large-scale international events.
The stadium will be a cricket venue and home to the AFL’s Tasmanian Devils and Australia’s national football teams, including the Socceroos and the Matildas. With a design that maximises space without impacting the landscape, Macquarie Point is shaping up to be a model for future green stadiums around the world.
