The Cenos Offshore Windfarm consortium, comprising Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn , has submitted its application for consent to the UK Marine Authority ( MD-LOT ) for the development of a floating offshore wind farm in the North Sea. With a nominal capacity of up to 1,350 MW, the project seeks to supply renewable energy to both the UK electricity grid and offshore oil and gas extraction platforms.
A large-scale floating offshore wind farm
Located 190 km off the coast of Peterhead, the park will feature up to 95 floating turbines, each with a maximum height of 320 metres. It is also one of the most ambitious renewable energy initiatives in the UK and will continue the experience gained with the Green Volt project , also developed by the consortium.
Cenos’ application falls under Crown Estate Scotland ’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round and requires approval of a number of permits including:
- Consent under section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989.
- Declaration under section 36A of the Electricity Act 1989.
- Marine licences under the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 and the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009.
We are leveraging the learnings and synergies we gained from implementing our sister project Green Volt as we advance Cenos, allowing us to capitalize on our first-mover advantage to implement this innovative and complex development at scale.
Cristóbal Pearson, Project Director of the Cenos Floating Offshore Wind Farm.
The wind farm will strengthen Scotland’s leadership in floating wind energy and contribute to emissions reduction by providing renewable electricity to industry. It is also expected to boost job creation in the renewable energy sector and foster the development of sustainable generation technologies.
As part of the regulatory process , the application is open to public comment until April 4, 2025. During this period, local communities, businesses and other stakeholders will be able to express their opinions on the project.
