Norwegian energy operator Vår Energi has achieved its third consecutive oil discovery in the Goliat field in the Barents Sea. This discovery was made in the Zagato exploration well, close to existing infrastructure in the region.
The gross recoverable resources of the well are estimated to range from 15 to 43 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe), which adds a considerable amount to the resources of the area.
The third oil discovery
This discovery adds to Countach’s previous discoveries, announced in 2024, bringing the total gross recoverable resources of the Goliat Range to approximately 100 MMboe. The proximity of the well to the Goliat FPSO platform allows for rapid, cost-effective development of this discovery, with low carbon emissions . In addition, the drilling of new wells in the coming months could unlock additional resources in the region.
Torger Rød, COO of Vår Energi, stressed that this discovery reaffirms the company’s position as a leader in exploration on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). The company continues to advance its exploration strategy, with up to 20 wells being drilled over the next four years , in collaboration with Equinor , its partner in the project. The drilling campaign targets both infill and exploration production wells, which will contribute to Norway’s production growth and energy security.
Vår Energi continues to show the high potential of the Goliat range and with future drilling and a new 3D and 4D seismic survey, it is expected to further delineate the resources and advance towards development studies. The company maintains its objective to sustain high-value production of between 350 and 400 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (kboepd) in the long term.
