Salzgitter AG has signed a strategic agreement with Siemens Gamesa for the supply of 25,000 tonnes of low-emission steel for the construction of 36 wind towers at the Thor wind farm in the North Sea, Denmark.

The steel will be supplied by Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH (ILG) and Mannesmann Grobblech GmbH (MGB), subsidiaries of Salzgitter AG, and will enable the production of Siemens Gamesa’s innovative GreenerTowers . These towers stand out for their low carbon footprint, with emissions of less than 700 kg of CO₂eq per tonne, which represents a significant advance for the industry.

Environmental and logistical benefits of the Thor wind farm

Thor, with a capacity of over 1,000 MW, will be Denmark’s largest wind farm when it comes into operation in 2027. It is expected to generate enough energy to supply more than one million homes.

The steel used in these wind towers comes from certified sources with low CO₂eq emissions. Part of the raw material is obtained at Peiner Träger GmbH, where electrical steel based on scrap and renewable energies is used, while the rest comes from European suppliers aligned with these sustainability criteria.

Innovation in manufacturing

To meet the project requirements, Salzgitter AG has invested in new technologies that enable the supply of panels up to 24 metres in length . This logistical innovation is key to the manufacture of high-rise towers capable of supporting more efficient wind turbines.

According to Maximilian Schnippering, Head of Sustainability at Siemens Gamesa, if all the towers installed annually by the company were replaced with GreenerTowers, the emissions equivalent to 466,000 cars driving in Europe for one year could be avoided.

The low-emission SALCOS steel for the wind towers will be delivered to manufacturers Windar Renovables (Spain) and Welcon A/S (Denmark) between March and October 2025. With this alliance, Siemens Gamesa and Salzgitter AG reinforce their commitment to sustainability and the development of cleaner and more efficient energy infrastructures .
