All American Marine builds state-of-the-art vessel for Harbor Breeze Cruises

It will be the first of its kind in the United States to operate with a parallel hybrid propulsion system.

All American Marine (AAM) has announced its collaboration with Harbor Breeze Cruises to design and build a 108-foot, 32.5-foot hybrid passenger vessel . This state-of-the-art vessel will operate in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, offering harbor eco-tours, whale watching, and dinner cruises.

The vessel’s design, developed by Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design, exceeds air quality requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The parallel hybrid propulsion system includes selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and a diesel particulate filter (DPF), along with a battery system supplied by ABB Inc.

A state-of-the-art vessel

The vessel will be equipped with two 250 kW traction motors and a 588 kW BorgWarner Energy Storage System (ESS), enabling emission-free operations during port runs. In addition, it will feature MAN D2862 EPA Tier 4 engines , provided by Northern Lights, driving fixed-pitch propellers through a Reinjtes gearbox.

This configuration will offer four operating modes: diesel propulsion, zero-emission all-electric propulsion, battery charging on the move, and stationary battery charging. These features allow Harbor Breeze Cruises to maintain operational flexibility while complying with the most stringent environmental regulations.

The vessel will have a capacity of 350 passengers and will feature multiple decks, including a custom-built stadium seating platform at the bow. The interior design, by Studio Sculli, emphasizes passenger comfort and experience, incorporating advanced technology for efficient and sustainable navigation.

A benchmark in maritime innovation

The project is part of the Los Angeles Marine Emissions Reduction (LA MER) initiative, which received a $15 million grant from CARB’s Advanced Technology Demonstration and Pilot Project program. This vessel will set a new standard in the maritime industry by being the first of its kind to operate with a parallel hybrid system.

We are very excited to design and build this vessel. It will surely set the standard for passenger ships, paving the way to a cleaner future.
