Type One Energy and TVA develop 350 MWe fusion plant in Tennessee

Type One Energy and TVA launch Infinity Two, a stellarator fusion plant that repurposes fossil infrastructure for sustainable energy by 2030.
Primera planta de fusión nuclear en Tennessee

Type One Energy has signed a cooperative agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to develop a nuclear fusion plant in the region, marking a significant step toward commercializing this technology. The pilot plant, called Infinity Two, will have a capacity of 350 MWe and is expected to be operational in the mid-2030s.

A strategic alliance for the energy of the future

The agreement expands Project Infinity, a collaboration that began in 2024 between Type One Energy, TVA and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Originally focused on the Infinity One prototype at TVA’s Bull Run plant, the project now encompasses siting studies, environmental assessments and financing plans for the Infinity Two plant.

Joe Hoagland, TVA’s vice president of innovation and research, said energy security is national security and that TVA is committed to developing technologies such as fusion to ensure a reliable and sustainable energy supply.

Infrastructure reuse and community development

The fusion plant has the potential to repurpose retired fossil fuel plant infrastructure, contributing to an efficient energy transition. Additionally, the agreement includes access to TVA’s Power Service Shops (PSS) in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, facilitating modular manufacturing of reactor components.

Type One Energy has also committed to workforce development in Tennessee and Alabama, training local communities in the operation and maintenance of stellarator fusion reactors .

A decisive step towards the commercialization of nuclear fusion

Christofer Mowry, CEO of Type One Energy, said that working with TVA allows them to focus on perfecting Infinity Two’s design and minimizing risks on the path to commercializing fusion energy.

Project Infinity aligns with TVA’s mission to provide secure, affordable and resilient energy, highlighting the importance of strategic partnerships to drive the adoption of innovative technologies in the global energy sector.
