In a strategic move aimed at optimizing its fleet, Noble Corporation has announced the divestment of the Pacific Meltem and Pacific Scirocco drillships , which were in cold stacking. The decision aims to reduce operating costs and concentrate resources on active and profitable units.

Final retirement

The company’s president and chief executive, Robert W. Eifler, explained that this measure responds to an ongoing evaluation of the cost-benefit balance of inactive assets.

According to the official statement, the company does not plan to sell these units for future drilling operations, but rather their retirement will be definitive and permanent . This could include scrapping the vessels.

Our decision to retire these non-contributing assets is based on an ongoing assessment of the cost-benefit of idle capacity. These retirements will generate immediate cash flow and result in a more efficient and better-fit fleet composition for Noble going forward.

About the Pacific Meltem and Pacific Scirocco drillships

The Pacific Meltem and Pacific Scirocco vessels, which will be retired by Noble Corporation, are high-capacity drilling units with advanced specifications.

The Pacific Meltem , built in 2014, has a drilling capacity of 12,000 feet of water depth and up to 40,000 feet of total drilling , with a sixth-generation control system. On the other hand, the Pacific Scirocco , built in 2011, has a double-hull structure and a fifth-generation drilling system with similar specifications, highlighting its fuel storage capacity of almost 39,000 barrels and an infrastructure prepared for operations in challenging environments.

The departure of these platforms marks the end of its participation in offshore exploration, aligning with the company’s asset optimization strategy.

Implications for the offshore drilling industry

The offshore drilling sector is facing a strategic transformation, with an increasing focus on ultra-deepwater exploration and the adoption of technologies for more sustainable operation. Noble Corporation has been a key player in this transition, managing its fleet to maximize profitability and operational efficiency.

With this action, the company seeks to maintain a competitive position in the market, aligning its resources with current industry demands and opportunities in emerging and established regions .
