In a landmark event for commercial aviation, Boom Supersonic managed to break the sound barrier with its experimental XB-1 aircraft . This historic flight took place on January 28, 2025 in the Mojave Desert air corridor in California.
This was the supersonic flight of the XB-1
The XB-1, piloted by Tristan “Geppetto” Brandenburg, reached an altitude of 35,290 feet and accelerated to Mach 1,122 (750 mph) . This made the XB-1 the first supersonic civilian jet developed by a private company in the United States .

Incorporating advanced technologies such as carbon fiber materials, digital stability systems and an augmented reality headset to improve landing, the aircraft also served as a platform to validate key concepts for the company’s future business model, the Overture , a commercial jet capable of carrying 64 to 80 passengers at a speed of Mach 1.7 .
Since its first takeoff in 2024 , the XB-1 has completed a rigorous series of 12 test flights (including this one), where engineers have expanded the jet’s capabilities in a safe and controlled manner. These trials ensured its success in extreme conditions and established a technological foundation for supersonic passenger travel.
Key innovations include supersonic air intakes and digitally optimized aerodynamics, which ensure efficient performance in all phases of flight.
Has the era of supersonic commercial flights arrived?
With the success of the XB-1, Boom Supersonic is turning its attention to the development of the Overture , scheduled for first flight in 2026. The company will continue wind tunnel testing and digital simulations while finalizing the design of its fuel- optimized Symphony engine. The company has also secured orders from airlines including American Airlines and United Airlines, underscoring the industry’s interest in high-speed, sustainable aviation solutions.
Boom Supersonic founder Blake Scholl called the achievement a critical step toward the return of supersonic commercial flight . With an order book exceeding 130 units and the ability to operate on sustainable fuels, Overture is shaping up to be the natural successor to the legendary Concorde , but with a renewed focus on sustainability and efficiency.
The XB-1’s supersonic flight demonstrates that the technology for supersonic passenger flight has arrived.
