Boeing has announced its partnership with Norsk e-Fuel, a pioneer in sustainable fuel production . This agreement seeks to develop one of the first industrial power-to-liquid (PtL) technology plants in Europe, located in Norway.
Boosting sustainable fuel
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has become a key pillar for reducing carbon emissions in the sector. Using fossil- free energy, Norsk e-Fuel will transform recycled CO2 and green hydrogen into a fuel known as e-SAF . This process can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to conventional fuel.
Steve Gillard, Boeing’s regional director of sustainability for Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, said the partnership underscores the importance of adopting renewable energy to ensure a sustainable future in aviation and that together with Norsk e-Fuel, they will accelerate the production and availability of SAF for their customers around the world.
Outlook for the sector
Currently, SAF use accounts for only 0.53% of global aviation fuel consumption. However, initiatives such as RefuelEU in Europe aim to increase this share to 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050. The Norsk e-Fuel plant will contribute to these goals and strengthen energy security in the Nordic countries.
Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian, stressed the importance of a favourable political framework to promote the production of e-fuels. “We are delighted to have Boeing as a strategic partner. Their investment confirms the positive development we have achieved and reinforces the need to scale up this technology,” he said.
A carbon neutral future
The vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 in commercial aviation requires partnerships like this, where companies with global leadership join forces to advance sustainable technologies such as the innovative PtL . Norsk e-Fuel, with its innovative approach and collaboration with key players such as Boeing, sets a precedent on the path to a cleaner future.
The partnership also seeks to make SAF affordable and widely accessible by promoting its adoption in critical aviation infrastructure. These measures strengthen the competitiveness of the sector and also establish a solid foundation for global sustainability.
