Aker Solutions and Statkraft have secured a contract to refurbish the Svean hydropower plant near Trondheim in Norway. The project aims to increase energy efficiency and boost sustainable energy generation capacity.
Svea hydroelectric power plant
The new facility will be developed in parallel to the existing plant and will have three state-of-the-art Francis turbines . These units will process up to 26,000 litres of water per second, with a production capacity of 12 MW each. This development will allow the maximum power of the plant to be increased by 10%.
As part of the contract, the company will supply essential components including control systems , turbines , generators , refurbished transformers and high voltage equipment. Aker Solutions Executive Vice President of Energy Solutions Jo Kjetil Krabbe said: ” We are pleased to collaborate with other companies in the modernization of the Svean hydropower system. This project aligns with our ambition to offer more flexible complete electromechanical projects that meet the future needs of the power system. “.
The Svean plant has been a mainstay of hydroelectric power generation in the region. With an average annual output of 120 GWh, it is enough to power 6,000 households. Following modernisation, operations are scheduled to begin in 2026, with completion expected by the end of 2027.
