Baku Shipyard is progressing with the construction of the first Damen Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) 650 in Azerbaijan . Designed by Damen Shipyards Group , this vessel reinforces the strategic positioning of the Port of Baku, located on the western coast of the Caspian Sea. Its commissioning is scheduled for the end of this year.

Technical specifications of the suction dredger

The CSD 650, named ‘Engineer Soltan Kazimov’, is a stationary dredger capable of operating in depths of between -3m and -18m. Equipped with a 1,825kW dredge pump and a 700kW cutter , it enables a turning width of 63m, ensuring efficient performance in maintenance work. Key materials for its construction, shipped on multiple transports from Damen, include components such as the operating cabin and main pump.

The Port of Baku, a key logistics hub on the Caspian Sea, connects critical routes between Asia and Europe. In recent years, falling water levels and port expansion have increased the need for regular dredging . This dredger will be key to keeping the berths operational and managing increasing port traffic.

International collaboration

Alexander Shamray, Damen Sales Director, praised the quality of the work carried out by Baku Shipyard , highlighting the effective cooperation between the teams. “ We are excited by the progress and are confident that this first dredger in Azerbaijan will be a success,” said Shamray.

The CSD 650 promises to strengthen Caspian maritime infrastructure, marking a milestone in technological and logistical collaboration between Damen and Azerbaijan.
