Photon Energy Group has announced the implementation of a 250 MW solar hydro project in Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This development includes a 150 MW thermal hydroelectric storage solution with the capacity to supply up to 12 hours of dispatchable power, using RayGen’s advanced technology.

The project covers up to 1,200 hectares and has been designed to be fully integrated into the South African electricity grid. Photon Energy has been granted favourable grid connection conditions to ensure energy stability in a region facing challenges from supply shortages.

In the next phase, the company will work closely with Eskom , Africa’s largest electricity provider, to design technical solutions that optimise power distribution and deliver essential services such as frequency regulation and peak demand management.

RayGen ’s Solar Hydro technology integrates concentrated solar heat and power generation with a water-based thermal storage system, providing an efficient and sustainable alternative for long-duration energy storage. Since its initial investment in 2020, Photon Energy has developed a strategic relationship with RayGen, positioning itself as a pioneer in the implementation of this technology.

The project is currently moving forward with the Environmental Impact Assessment scheduled for the fourth quarter of the year and the application for an energy licence with NERSA . In addition, it is expected to be ready for construction in the second quarter of 2026, consolidating its role as an important driver of the energy transition in South Africa.
