With the official opening of the world’s steepest cable car, Switzerland marks a milestone in mountain transport innovation. This project, which connects the picturesque Stechelberg Valley with the exclusive Alpine village of Mürren, stands out for its incredible gradient of 159.4%. A breakthrough that has captured the attention of tourists, engineering enthusiasts and those seeking agile and safe transport in extreme terrain.

Technological innovation in the heart of the Swiss Alps

The new ropeway, part of the ambitious SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project, is not just an architectural marvel. With an autonomous system based on AURO (Autonomous Ropeway Operation) technology, the ropeway can operate without the need for personnel inside the cabins , improving safety and transport efficiency.

Thanks to an 11-metre suspension arm and a system of high-precision cameras and sensors, the cable car manages to overcome the extreme slope without losing stability , transporting up to 800 people per hour.

The first section of this new line connects Stechelberg to Mürren in just four minutes, covering a distance of almost 1,200 metres and a vertical drop of 775 metres . Travellers can enjoy breathtaking views as they travel along the steep walls of the Mürrenfluh – a spectacle unique in the world.

The world’s steepest cable car for adventurers

The opening, which took place on 13 December 2024, was a major event attended by more than 600 guests. During the ceremony, guided tours of the new stations in Stechelberg and Mürren were given , with detailed explanations of the innovations that make this cable car a world reference. In addition, attendees were able to enjoy a party in the station bar and learn about the operation of this advanced transport system up close.

Funifor, the future of transport in Switzerland

In parallel, the first Funifor cable car in Switzerland was inaugurated, between Mürren and Birg. This system is designed to ensure continuous and safe transport, even in extreme weather conditions, thanks to its wind resistance and its ability to operate independently.

This development ensures that the stations can remain operational throughout the year, even during maintenance or inspection periods. The second Funifor line is scheduled to open in November 2025, and promises to further improve connectivity in the region.

Schilthorn: a unique destination in the world

The cable car also connects travellers to the famous Piz Gloria revolving restaurant at the summit of the Schilthorn, known worldwide for its appearance in the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service . Attracting tourists from all over the world, this spot is a testament to the perfect blend of technology and tourism in the Swiss Alps.

Although the upper section of the cable car between Birg and Schilthorn will be closed until March 2025, the opening of the first stage marks an important step forward in the development of this ambitious project.
