Wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has announced a major upgrade and refurbishment of its Isle of Wight plant in the UK. After more than two decades focused on producing blades for offshore wind turbines, the plant will now focus on manufacturing blades for onshore turbines.
The factory on the Isle of Wight
The UK government is moving ahead with a decision to lift the de facto moratorium on onshore wind power in the country. This move has led to a boost in the construction of onshore wind turbines and the expansion of clean energy in the region, prompting the company to redirect its capabilities towards the onshore market.
Under the new agreement reached with the UK Government, the Isle of Wight factory will continue to operate, although it will now focus on the production of wind turbines for onshore wind energy. This transition will allow approximately 300 jobs to be maintained at the plant and create new opportunities throughout the UK supply chain.
Vestas COO Anders Nielsen stressed the importance of this agreement: “We have invested in jobs and manufacturing activities on the Isle of Wight for over two decades, and are very pleased by the technical expertise that has been developed on site. We are pleased that this partnership in principle with the UK Government means that we can continue manufacturing activities on the Isle of Wight to support the scale of onshore wind energy in the UK. .
He also added the following words: “The commitment to domestic manufacturing and clean energy from the new Government and the Secretary of State has been instrumental in making this decision. My sincere thanks to everyone who works for us on the Isle of Wight, for their significant contribution to wind energy, and we are pleased to retain and offer many opportunities for our affected colleagues during this process. “.
