Westinghouse Electric Company and CORE POWER announce a strategic partnership for the design and development of a new generation of floating nuclear power plants ( FNPP ) that will use the eVinci microreactor technology.

The development of the eVinci microreactor

Floating nuclear power plants can be manufactured centrally, modular and easily transported to locations such as islands, ports, coastal communities and industries. The adaptability and transportability of the eVinci microreactor , combined with the efficiency of shipyards, makes it an ideal solution for these installations.

eVinci microreactors are compact, low-maintenance nuclear power units with an estimated lifespan of eight years without the need for refueling. This capability makes them ideal for operation in almost any location, providing reliable, clean energy in places that previously had no access to nuclear power sources.

Furthermore, its implementation of heat pipe technology improves reliability in heat transfer, gradually and passively, without the use of water cooling systems. This non-pressurized heat transfer technology eliminates the complexity of recirculation systems.

Westinghouse President of eVinci Technologies , Jon Ball , commented: “ This pioneering agreement allows us to demonstrate the viability of our eVinci technology in innovative scenarios where the need for reliable power is critical, such as in remote locations or in maritime and coastal areas .”

The development of FNPP with eVinci microreactors has applications in industry and coastal communities, and could lay the groundwork for the use of nuclear energy in humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters, supplying energy quickly and reliably.

CORE POWER ‘s executive director highlighted: “Our partnership with Westinghouse represents a step change in the way nuclear power can be accessed. The ability to deliver turnkey, seaborne power plants offers a perfect solution to meet the growing demand for clean, flexible and reliable electricity, without exceeding budgets.” ”.

The eVinci microreactor has the capability to generate clean nuclear power for multiple applications beyond maritime, such as mining operations, data centers, and defense installations. Additionally, it is suitable for hydrogen production and other industrial applications requiring high-temperature heat.
