Canadian company ReconAfrica has reached a new milestone at its project in Namibia, after successfully completing drilling operations at the Naingopo well . This field is located in the Petroleum Exploration License PEL 73 and has reached a total depth of 4,184 meters, exceeding the initially projected depth of 3,800 meters.

This well is the first of several in a program that aims to evaluate the Damara Fold Belt , a region known for its hydrocarbon potential. Drilling has given way to a new phase of evaluation that will include logging and coring, as well as testing for hydrocarbon detection using specialized tools such as the Modular Formation Dynamics Tester ( MDT ) and the Vertical Seismic Profile ( VSP ). Preliminary results of the operation are expected in the coming weeks.

The Naingopo well , with its target of 181 million barrels of unrisked light/medium oil and 15 million barrels of risked prospective oil, is one project in ReconAfrica’s plans. The company is eyeing the Kumbundu well , which holds an estimated 309 million barrels of unrisked prospective oil. In total, the area has natural gas resource potential, with 937 billion cubic feet of unrisked gas at Naingopo and 1.6 trillion cubic feet of risked gas prospective at Kumbundu.

The ReconAfrica team remains committed to responsible exploration and has reiterated its commitment to following environmental and social best practices in its operations, with the aim of minimising any environmental impact.

Despite the expected results, the company has recalled that there is no certainty about the discovery of these resources or their commercial viability for production, given that prospective resources are based on estimates. With this successful drilling, ReconAfrica takes another step towards expanding its presence in the Damara Fold Belt and the Kavango Rift Basin .
