Technology company Baker Hughes has announced the award of major contracts with Petrobras to supply 77 km of flexible pipeline systems in Brazil’s pre-salt fields. These contracts were signed on October 15, 2024, and the agreement was finalized following an open tender, consolidating and extending the strategic relationship between the two companies.
Obtaining contracts in flexible piping systems
The project includes the delivery of risers and flowlines required for hydrocarbon production such as gas and water injection. These systems are designed to withstand the extreme conditions of the Búzios , Libra , Berbigão , Sururu and Sépia fields, with challenges such as high CO₂ concentration. Baker Hughes has developed solutions that address the problem of CO₂ -induced stress corrosion cracking ( SCC-CO₂ ), ensuring safe and efficient operations.
Petrobras has made controlling CO₂ emissions a priority, and Baker Hughes technology is critical to this goal. By re-injecting CO₂ into wells, rather than releasing it into the atmosphere, Petrobras minimizes its carbon footprint, maximizing oil recovery. The Santos Basin has great potential for Latin America’s energy future. Our technology helps overcome the unique challenges of these operations. “,” said Amerino Gatti, executive vice president of Oilfield Services and Equipment at Baker Hughes.
The flexible piping systems will be manufactured at Baker Hughes’ plant in Niterói, Brazil, as a key player in the country’s energy supply chain. This commitment to local production strengthens Brazil’s energy infrastructure, creating employment opportunities while supporting the region’s economic development.
Baker Hughes and Petrobras have worked on several projects throughout 2024, including additional contracts for 69.1 km of pipeline systems and well construction services in the Búzios field. With these partnerships, the company reaffirms its leadership and dedication to sustainable and efficient solutions in the energy sector.
