HGK Shipping has taken a step forward in the transition towards sustainable inland waterway transport with the launch of the “TMS Monomera” , an ultra-modern tanker that marks a significant advance in European inland waterway technology . On 30 October, at a ceremony in Druten, the Netherlands, the TMS was officially christened and put into service to carry out sodium hydroxide transports from Germany to ARA ports, in collaboration with the chemical company VESTOLIT.

The innovative vessel is equipped with a diesel-electric propulsion system that optimizes fuel consumption and significantly reduces emissions. This system is complemented by an advanced energy manager, allowing the vessel to operate more efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner.

In addition, the tanker has been designed with storage spaces reserved for future energy solutions, making it a ship ready to adapt to climate-neutral fuels when they become available.

HGK Shipping’s commitment to the energy transition

Steffen Bauer, CEO of HGK Shipping, said that the “Monomera” represents a clear commitment to the energy transition . With an optimized design that maximizes cargo capacity and reduces water resistance through advanced fluid dynamics techniques, the tanker can navigate efficiently even in low water conditions. The vessel can carry up to 348 tons with a draft of just 1.20 meters , which is ideal for narrow channels and shallow waters.

This project, developed at HGK Shipping’s Design Centre, involved the collaboration of the Dutch shipyard De Gerlien van Tiem BV and the Severnav shipyard in Romania. The hull construction was completed in Romania, while the final outfitting work was carried out in the Netherlands.

Norbert Meixner, Head of Business Unit Liquid Chemicals at HGK Shipping, highlighted the strong relationship with VESTOLIT , noting that this collaboration is based on common values of sustainability and innovation. The “Monomera” thus becomes a key piece in ensuring a reliable and environmentally friendly supply chain in European shipping .
