Community Offshore Wind has submitted its most ambitious proposal to date: an offshore wind project that could generate up to 2.8 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy for New York State . This proposal, which was submitted to the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA), is the largest in the history of wind projects in the region.
Wind power in New York Bay
The project would be developed in two phases, on a lease area in New York Harbor. With this move, Community Offshore Wind, a joint venture between RWE and National Grid Ventures , is positioning itself as one of the most important players in the transition to a renewable energy future in the state.
New York has set an ambitious goal of obtaining 70% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. This project will contribute significantly to achieving that goal, providing clean and reliable electricity for approximately one million homes. The first phases of the project would be operational in 2030, and the entire project is expected to be completed by 2032.
Economic and social impact
In addition to contributing to New York’s climate goals, the project will also create job opportunities for New Yorkers. It is estimated to generate nearly 700 direct jobs and an economic impact of more than $3 billion , with $300 million going to wages.
Community Offshore Wind’s commitment to inclusion and community development is also highlighted, with $121 million allocated to programs that will support local communities, such as job training and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.
Benefits for local communities
A significant portion of the project is designed to benefit historically disadvantaged communities. 35% of direct jobs will be reserved for these communities, and $64 million will be invested in training programs to ensure that these workers can access well-paid jobs in the clean energy sector .
In conclusion, the Community Offshore Wind proposal is one of the most ambitious ever seen in New York, and promises to be a fundamental pillar in the transition towards a more sustainable energy future, while boosting the economic and social development of the state.
