Cummins ’ zero-emission division, Accelera by Cummins , has officially opened an electrolyser plant in Spain. This facility is designed with high sustainability standards, and is presented as a step forward in the green hydrogen infrastructure for Europe. The factory began production in April 2024, and has an initial capacity to manufacture 500 MW of electrolysers per year, with the potential to scale up to 1 GW.

The project is part of Accelera’s commitment to global decarbonisation, generating up to 200 jobs as production grows. The electrolysers produced at this plant will use proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology, which facilitates the production of clean hydrogen using renewable energy sources. This will allow Spain to position itself as a European hub for green hydrogen , contributing to the reduction of emissions in energy-intensive industries.

“Our new plant is a crucial step in global efforts to decarbonize industries. Together with our community partners, we are boosting the local economy and building the infrastructure needed to make hydrogen a reliable and accessible solution.”

Amy Davis, president of Accelera Zero.

The electrolyzer plant is equipped with energy efficiency innovations, such as 3,000 solar panels on the roof, capable of covering 70% of the facility’s energy demand , and 100 geothermal points for heating and cooling for specialized equipment.

The facility also features a natural lighting and rainwater harvesting system, highlighting Accelera’s focus on sustainability. These features allow the factory to minimize its carbon footprint while advancing the manufacturing and production of electrolyzers.

The green hydrogen used is produced from renewable sources and plays a central role in the energy transition towards an emission-free future. Accelera electrolysers are deployed in projects around the world, such as the 20 MW system in Quebec, Canada, and a 25 MW system in Florida, USA.

In addition to generating employment, the President of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, highlighted the long-term impact that this plant will have on the region: “ This plant will not only create hundreds of jobs, but will also put Guadalajara and Castilla-La Mancha on the economic map in the medium and long term, attracting other companies in the sector and consolidating regional development .”
