Equinor and Masdar have completed a major maintenance campaign on the Hywind Scotland wind farm , the world’s first floating offshore wind farm. The five turbines were towed to the base in Wergeland, Norway, for repairs and heavy maintenance,

Hywind Scotland wind farm undergoes deep maintenance

Hywind Scotland , with an installed capacity of 30 MW, supplies renewable energy to around 35,000 homes in the UK. With a capacity factor of 54%, this farm demonstrates the potential of floating offshore wind energy in the fight against climate change. The use of a floating substructure allows for operation in depths of up to 120 metres, an innovative design that reduces structural fatigue and maximises efficiency.

“The successful completion of the maintenance campaign at Hywind Scotland is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our teams and partners. As the world’s first floating offshore wind farm, Hywind Scotland has demonstrated the immense potential of floating wind energy. Through this maintenance campaign, we have gained valuable insights that will help us refine maintenance practices and optimise this technology for the future.”

Trine Ulla, Vice President, UK Operations, Equinor.

Masdar highlighted the importance of Hywind as an example of the future of clean energy. The collaboration with Equinor has been very important in ensuring the performance of these turbines, which are also part of a broader effort to develop floating technology, also applicable in parks such as Hywind Tampen in the North Sea.

The success of this campaign ensures the optimal operation of the wind farm , and also underlines the viability of floating technology in severe marine conditions, paving the way for future expansions of floating wind energy around the world.
