The oil company Ecopetrol begins testing the production of sustainable aviation fuel ( SAF ) at the Cartagena Refinery. Starting in October 2024, the first 20 thousand barrels of this biofuel are expected to be produced.

SAF will be co-processed with up to 5% plant-based feedstocks , such as palm oil and used cooking oils. This type of fuel can meet the rigorous quality standards required in aviation, creating a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels.

The technology used for its production has been developed by experts from the Colombian Institute of Petroleum and Energies for the Transition ( ICPET ), which highlights Colombia’s commitment to technological innovation in renewable energies.

This pilot project is part of the SAF Roadmap in Colombia and is aligned with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector. However, for sustained SAF production to become a reality, it will be necessary to implement appropriate regulation and obtain life cycle certifications for both raw materials and the production process. In addition, a diversified basket of raw materials will need to be consolidated, including vegetable oils, animal fats, biomass and ethanol, to ensure long-term sustainability.

With this project, Ecopetrol is advancing in its goal of producing more sustainable fuels and contributing to the country’s energy transition. The Cartagena Refinery is an example of how companies can adapt to the demands of the global market, developing innovative products that reduce environmental impact and promote the use of clean energy.
