Verne introduces world’s first heavy-duty cryocompressed hydrogen truck

Verne Company has unveiled the world’s first Class 8 cryocompressed hydrogen(CcH₂) heavy-duty truck. This vehicle was unveiled during the Alberta Motor Transport Association’s Innovation Expo in Edmonton, Canada.

Verne’s cryocompressed hydrogen storage system maximizes storage density, achieving greater autonomy, relative to liquid hydrogen. liquid or high-pressure compressed hydrogen or high-pressure compressed hydrogen. This dual-fuel system allows fleets to explore the use of hydrogen without the need for a massive investment in new vehicles, providing a transitional option for the transportation industry.

Commercial pilots and tests underway

The company has announced that it will soon begin test driving the truck and will conduct commercial pilots with vehicle manufacturers in Canada and the United States. The tests will include the use of dual-fuel engines, hydrogen combustion and fuel cells, which will allow performance to be evaluated under different operating conditions.

“The demonstration of the first Class 8 truck powered by cryocompressed hydrogen will be a major milestone for the hydrogen industry and a major step towards the decarbonization of large-scale road transport.”

In addition to developing this truck, Verne is also working on a hydrogen distribution platform that could reduce transportation costs by up to 40%. This platform will facilitate the use of hydrogen in multiple sectors that currently rely on diesel, contributing to the global energy transition.

With support from key partners, including Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund and Caterpillar VC, Verne has made advances in cryocompressed hydrogen technology. This project is also supported by Alberta Innovates and its Hydrogen Centre of Excellence program, which is driving hydrogen adoption in Canada.
