Google DeepMind has unveiled two innovative artificial intelligence systems that aim to improve the capabilities of robots to perform complex and precise tasks. These systems, called ALOHA Unleashed and DemoStart, promise to boost robotic dexterity, a fundamental challenge for making robots to be useful in everyday life..
ALOHA Unleashed: improved manipulation with two arms
Historically, advanced robots could only perform simple tasks using a single arm. However, ALOHA Unleashed introduced an innovative approach that enabled two-arm manipulation. This system was able to perform activities such as tying a shoelace, hanging shirts, repairing other robots and cleaning kitchens, demonstrating unprecedented precision.

The technology is based on the ALOHA 2platform, which significantly improves the ability of robots to learn new tasks with fewer demonstrations. In addition, it integrates a learning process that uses data collected from remote teleoperation of robots, then predicts actions from random noise, similar to the Image model used by Google model used by Google to generate images.
DemoStart – reinforcement learning for more complex tasks
On the other hand, DemoStart focuses on reinforcement learning in a simulation environment to acquire dexterous behaviors, especially in multi-fingered robots. This system uses a progressive approach, starting with simple tasks and progressing to more complex activities.
One of the most outstanding achievements was reaching a success rate of over 98% in simulation and 97% in the real world for tasks such as reorientation and object lifting. All of this was accomplished using MuJoCo, an open source physics simulator developed by Google. This approach allows a more efficient transfer of knowledge acquired in simulations to the physical world.
Google DeepMind will make robots more skilled
These advances are an important step on the road to more dexterous robots capable of performing useful tasks at home or at work. Although robotic dexterity is still developing, technologies such as ALOHA Unleashed and DemoStart indicate that we are getting closer and closer to robots that can interact with the environment in a more natural and efficient way.
