Lando Norris drives the real McLaren P1 LEGO Technic at Silverstone

The supercar has 768 LEGO Power Function motors inside and took more than 8,000 hours to build!

The LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive have taken on an epic challenge: to create a LEGO supercar of the McLaren P1 with LEGO Technic pieces, fully drivable and on a real scale. The replica weighs 1220 kg and consists of 342,817 LEGO Technic pieces.

With the McLaren P1 ready, the next step was to put it to the test at Silverstone, one of the most emblematic circuits in the world. And who better than Lando Norris, official McLaren F1 driver, to take on this challenge? Norris completed the 5.891 km lap of the circuit, taking this LEGO engineering masterpiece to a level never seen before.

First LEGO supercar with functional steering

This incredible model, built on a 1:1 scale, has fully functional steering, allowing it to take the most difficult curves – the first time a LEGO vehicle is capable of such maneuvers! Equipped with an electric motor based on LEGO Technic Function batteries, the car can travel impressive distances compared to previous LEGO models.

To replicate the iconic V8 of the original McLaren, the LEGO team incorporated 8 engine packs, each with 96 LEGO Power Function engines, for a total of 768 engines . In this way, the vehicle was able to accomplish its race.

The development of this vehicle was a feat in itself, requiring the collaboration of 23 design, engineering and construction specialists fromdesign, engineering and construction specialists from LEGO and McLaren. Over 8,344 hours, they spent 6,134 hours developing and 2,210 hours building the car. In addition, 11 of the 393 LEGO Technic elements used were molded specifically for this project.

Innovation and unique details for fans

This project is part of the LEGO Technic Ultimate Car Concept series, which since 2016 has been bringing dream vehicles to supercar fans is a “must have” for collectors, and offers unique details such as a 7-speed gearbox, suspension and a V8 piston engine. This collaboration seeks to inspire future generations of engineers and designers to take innovation further.

With a length of 4,980 mm, a width of 2,101 mm, and a height of 1,133 mm, this replica of the LEGO Technic replica is impressively accurate. Each car has a unique serial number that allows access to exclusive behind-the-scenes content. It is available at LEGO Stores and on the official LEGO website for all enthusiasts.
