Boru Hatları ile Petrol Taşıma AŞ (BOTAŞ), Turkey’s state-owned company, has signed a liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply contract with Shell International Trading Middle East Fze. This agreement, which will have a duration of ten years, will enable Shell supply up to 4 billion cubic meters of LNG per year to BOTAŞ, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.

The agreement, signed by Abdulvahit Fidan, CEO of BOTAŞ, and Tom Summers, Shell’s senior vice president of liquefied natural gas marketing and trading, was celebrated at a ceremony attended by Alparslan Bayraktar, Turkey’s minister of energy. During the event, the minister emphasized the importance of diversifying sources of natural gas. sources of natural gas to offer energy at more competitive prices and strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure.
In addition, this agreement will enable Turkey to consolidate its position as a key player in theregion’s energy market. The infrastructure of liquefied natural gas liquefied natural gas terminals and pipeline infrastructure of BOTAŞ, together with the flexible supply provided by Shell, will strengthen Turkey’s ability to export gas to Europe. This move is part of Turkey’s strategy to become a gas hub in Europe and the Mediterranean.
Wael Sawan, executive director of Shellstressed that liquefied natural gas is a reliable energy source and key to the transition to a lower-carbon energy system. Shell expects to increase its LNG business by 20-30% by 2030, and this agreement with BOTAŞ is part of that strategy.
