Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has initiated a collaboration with partners such as IKEA and Kyocera to reduce carbon emissions in shipping through the use of biofuels. This effort is a key step forward in the decarbonization of the shipping sector, with the first voyage using B24 biofuel to take place in early August 2024.

Biofuels: A solution for maritime transport

The biofuel used is a blend of ISCC-certified used cooking oil methyl esters combined with VLSFO. This alternative fuel allows a significant reduction in carbon emissions. carbon emissionsemissions, contributing to a greener supply chain. The partners involved will receive a Green Certificate attesting to the carbon emissions saved during the transportation of their products.

The calculation and allocation of these emissions reductions are verified through the Global Shipping Business Network(GSBN) using blockchain technology, ensuring an accurate and immutable record. This project is part of OOCL’s strategy to advance the transition to more sustainable shipping, using the Well-to-Wake approach to measure carbon emissions from fuel production to its use in operations.

Collaborating with partners in low-carbon shipping is an unprecedented and very important event in OOCL’s environmental and sustainability journey. It enables OOCL and its partners to move towards their own decarbonization roadmap. I would like to thank our partners, such as IKEA, Kyocera and many others, for their trust and support in OOCL and for their participation in the first journey. We look forward to establishing additional and lasting sustainability collaborations with all our partners and stakeholders to reduce emissions along the supply chain and create a greener future together.

mentioned OOCL’s chief operating officer, Michael Xu.
