BOEM otorga a Maine el primer contrato de investigación eólica marina flotante en EE.UU.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has awarded Maine the first floating offshore wind research lease in the United States. The lease covers an area of nearly 15,000 acres located 28 nautical miles offshore on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). and will allow for the installation of up to 12 wind turbines capable of generating 144 megawatts of clean energy.

Maine to study floating offshore wind energy

This research project represents a crucial breakthrough in assessing the feasibility of floating offshore wind energy in deep water. The state of Maine, along with the fishing community, wildlife experts, the offshore wind industry, and the offshore wind industry and others, will conduct comprehensive studies to determine how this technology can be effectively integrated into the ocean environment. ocean environment without harming current uses and with minimal environmental impact.

The State of Maine will be required to submit a plan of research activities to BOEM, which will be evaluated under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) before proceeding with any construction. Construction activities are not expected to begin for several years while permitting requirements are met and necessary studies are conducted.

Elizabeth Klein, director of BOEM, underscored the importance of the project:

Floating wind power opens up new opportunities to generate renewable energy far from shore, which is essential to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and combat climate change.

The lease will not only support research, but will also lay the groundwork for commercial offshore wind energy development in the U.S., which could generate high-paying jobs and strengthen the local economy.

For her part, Maine Governor Janet Mills stressed the importance of this collaboration:

This lease is the result of a joint commitment that positions Maine as a leader in responsible offshore wind energy, balancing economic development with the protection of our environment.
