The Swedish company Candela Technology, with expertise in the design of electric hydrofoils, has signed an agreement with NEOM, a “sustainable development megacity project” in Saudi Arabia. The P-12, recognized as the world’s first electric hydrofoil, will be established as an essential part of the water network and its connection to this futuristic project.
P-12s redesign marine transportation
NEOM’s initial order includes eight units of the P-12, the largest contract announced to date for the Swedish company. These electric vessels will consume 80% less energy compared to ships, reducing CO₂ emissions.
Candela’s CEO, Gustav Hasselskog, noted that the“Candela hydrofoil” is designed for water mobility with zero pollutant gas emissions. Unlike other ferries, these hydrofoils offer more frequent and faster departures, improving the passenger experience and reducing travel time on NEOM’s water network.
“That is one feature that stands out, the fluidity of boarding, by an extendable and automatic bow ramp, which allows adjustment to different dock heights, from 0.2 to 2 meters, allowing the hydrofoils several world routes, without the need for dock modifications” highlighted Hasselskog.
In addition to their energy efficiency, the P-12s are extremely quiet, minimizing disturbance to marine wildlife. With a capacity for up to 30 passengers and a range of more than two hours at a speed of 25 knots.
“With the P-12, we not only offer a faster and more convenient electric alternative to fossil-fueled vessels. We offer operators the ability to switch to sustainable vessels while increasing profits. That’s very important in driving the transition to fossil fuel-free oceans and lakes.”
