China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) has announced a crucial breakthrough in clean energy production technology with the delivery of a flue gas waste heat power generation unit in Tianjin. The unit, the first of its kind in the world, will be implemented in the Wenchang 9-7 oilfield development project.

This innovative device stands out for taking advantage of the high-temperature combustion gases generated on offshore platforms. offshore platformsa challenge so far unresolved at the global and national level. The unit converts waste heat into clean energy, increasing energy efficiency by 60% to 70% and significantly reducing carbon emissions, according to China National Offshore Oil Corp.

An Weizheng, chief engineer of the Engineering Research and Design Department of CNOOC’s Research Institute, said, “We are very pleased to announce that we have been able to develop CNOOCexplained that this unit could improve the overall efficiency of power plants by 7%, reducing crude oil and natural gas consumption.

On the other hand, the unit is expected to generate 40 million kWh annually, enough to meet the demand of 30,000 homes, in addition to saving 300 million cubic meters of natural gas in 20 years. This saving would avoid the emission of 800,000 tons of CO₂, equivalent to planting 7.5 million trees.
