Fortescue Metals Group has announced the announcement and commencement of construction of a green metals supply chain with the start of work on its Green Metal Project, using green hydrogen, located in Western Australia.

The initial phase of the Green Metal Project

This $50 million project, located at the Christmas Creek Green Energy Hub, is designed to produce more than 1,500 tons of green metal per year, with first production scheduled for 2025.

The Green Metal Project will use green hydrogen produced at the Fortescue hydrogen facility, which is the largest liquid and gaseous hydrogen plant in Australia. This facility, which is partially powered by solar energy, will enable Fortescue to create high-purity metal suitable for use in steel plants around the world, thereby contributing to significant reductions in carbon emissions in the iron and steel industry.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Fortescue CEO, Dr. Andrew Forrest AO, highlighted the importance of the project, stating: “Today we celebrate innovation, collaboration and our ambitious goals. This is a vital moment in our journey to build a green metals supply chain. “.

The project is also supported by the Western Australian Government, which sees green hydrogen as a key tool for decarbonizing remote areas and reducing reliance on diesel in mining operations.

The Green Energy Hub will house green metal production, and will be an innovation center for decarbonization, with prototypes of zero-emission mining equipment and state-of-the-art fast-charging technology.. In addition, the project includes a hydrogen refueling station for a fleet of fuel cell electric cars.
