BlueFloat Energy announced a few days ago the location of Taiwan’s first floating wind farm, called “Winds of September Phase 1”. This project is part of the upcoming Floating Demonstration Program that the Taiwanese government plans to launch by the end of 2024.

The“Winds of September Phase 1” project will involve the installation of up to 12 floating platforms with a total capacity of 180 MW, located 23 km off the coast of the city of Hsinchu. From its start-up in 2021, this project has been developed with a meticulous approach, including a floating lidar campaign to assess energy performance.

Site selection and project design have been guided by a thorough environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) process, as well as geophysical studies analyzing ground conditions. These efforts ensure that the project is tailored to Taiwan’s unique environmental constraints and natural conditions.

In collaboration with the Metal Industries Research and Development Center (MIRDC), BlueFloat Energy is working on analyzing local supply chain capacity for the manufacture of mooring and anchoring systems for the floating offshore wind energy. This agreement reaffirms the company’s commitment to the development of a competitive offshore wind industry in Taiwan.

In addition to the collaboration with MIRDC, the company has worked closely with local communities, including the Hsinchu Fishermen’s Association, to ensure harmonious integration of the project with the local environment and activities. Stakeholder involvement has been key to the success of the environmental and social assessments.

The future of floating wind energy

Carlos Martin, CEO of BlueFloat Energy, expressed confidence that Taiwan will continue to develop a strong offshore wind industry, moving from fixed projects on the bottom to innovative floating wind farms. This project represents a technological breakthrough and an opportunity to create jobs and promote sustainable economic growth in the region.

The company continues to lead the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, with projects that reflect its commitment to global decarbonization and innovation in renewable energy.
