Seed House: Chile’s first 3D printed house

The construction of “Seed House”, a pioneer in the field of 3D printing, has already begun. 3D printing in Chile, the result of a collaboration between the Universidad del Bío-Bío and Inmobiliaria Aconcagua. This project sets a precedent both in Chile and Latin America by integrating technologies that promote efficiency, sustainability and adaptability.

In particular, “Seed House” stands out for incorporating functionalities that optimize seismic resistance and thermal efficiency, thus adapting to the demands of the Chilean context. The objective is to provide a housing alternative that meets the growing demand for efficient and ecological housing.

Construction process and design of the “Seed House”.

The construction process began at the UBB facilities, where the prototype walls were printed and then assembled on the Inmobiliaria Aconcagua site, located in the Torreones neighborhood of Concepción. This process was completed in just two mornings, with a total of 29 hours of printing, thus demonstrating the speed of this technology compared to other more traditional construction traditional construction methods.

Currently, the project is in its final stage, where windows are being installed, paint is being applied and the roof is being installed. It is anticipated that the home will be completed and open to the public in the coming weeks, allowing visitors to explore the advantages of additive construction.

The architectural design of the Seed House offers various configurations to adapt to different terrains and family needs, ensuring quality housing in reduced times. This innovative solution is a creative response to the high demand for sustainable housing in Chile.

Advances in 3D seismic-resistant housing

Rodrigo Abufon, commercial manager of Inmobiliaria Aconcagua, emphasized that projects such as the Seed House are crucial to the process of innovation in housing construction in Chile. For her part, Dr. Claudia Muñoz Sanguin Claudia Muñoz Sanguinetti of the UBB, highlighted the development of 3D printing technology. 3D printing since 2018, culminating in the creation of the first printed housing prototype that is seismic-resistant.

The Seed House will be accessible to the public for one year, offering a space to discover new trends in construction and the practical applications of 3D printing in the housing sector.
