The offshore wind energy sector is about to undergo a transformation with the launch of the WinDTwin project. This innovative initiative, supported by European funds, has as its main objective the efficiency and optimization of the wind energy obtained.

The WinDTwin project, an innovative proposal

With a grant of €6 million, this three-year project brings together a diverse consortium composed of 13 entities from 7 countries. The mission is to develop a highly accurate and dynamic digital twin (DT) for offshore wind farms, transforming the forecasting and management of wind energy production.

The global demand for renewable energies is intensifying, and one of the examples is the expansion of wind farms, both onshore and offshore. The efficiency of today’s wind farms underlines the importance of the strategic location of turbines and their optimal interconnection.

However, as we move towards the integration of farms into larger clusters and virtual power plants, challenges arise in terms of potential long-distance negative interactions, which may affect the expected gains from such clusters.

The WinDTwin platform responds to these challenges by developing an advanced digital twin platform. The platform aims to transform the industry by providing accurate forecasts of electricity production and energy demand. It will also serve as a central resource for decision-makers, providing access to high-quality models, scenarios and visualizations, enabling more informed and strategic offshore wind energy management decisions.

The success of the WinDTwin project is based on the collaboration of its diverse and experienced consortium. With expertise in wind energy production, industrial codes, numerical methods and algorithms, this collective effort is vital to achieving research and innovation goals.

“WinDTwin represents a significant leap forward in our ability to harness and manage offshore wind energy. By integrating advanced digital twin technology, we are setting a new benchmark for accuracy and efficiency in wind energy forecasting and decision making. Our collaborative approach, based on the expertise of our recognized partners, positions us to drive significant innovations that will benefit the entire renewable energy sector.”

Oriol Lehmkuhl, WinDTwin project coordinator.
