The major company JERA has set a milestone in the shipping industry with the world’s first truck-to-ship ammonia supply, a fact made to NYK Line’s tug A-Tug.
First ammonia supply for zero emissions by 2050
This event was held at Honmoku Pier in Yokohama Port in anticipation of the completion of the A-Tug by the end of August 2024. This type of ammonia was produced by Resonac Corporation in Kawasaki, using plastic waste as raw material.
Given the toxicity of ammonia, JERA implemented strict safety measures in collaboration with NYK and Resonac. Protocols were established for the safe safe handling of ammoniaincluding transportation and reception in the port area, as well as contingency measures in case of leakage. These efforts underscore the importance of safety in energy innovations.
This project is part of the JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050 initiative. JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050initiative, which seeks to achieve zero net CO₂ emissions in its operations by 2050. The use of ammonia as a fuel represents a decarbonization solution that transcends the energy sector, contributing to the reduction of emissions in other industrial sectors.
