In a remarkable breakthrough for robotics, researchers at Stanford University have developed a humanoid robotdubbed “HumanPlus,” capable of acquiring and executing multiple skills by directly observing human actions. This progress represents a significant step towards the creation of machines that can adapt and function in diverse situations with high versatility.

Observational learning capabilities

HumanPlus stands out for its ability to mimic human actions in real time using a single RGB camera and an integrated full-body approach. This innovative system can learn and reproduce complex activities such as boxing, piano, ping-pong, among others, after approximately 40 hours of observing human movement data.

The robot has demonstrated an impressive ability to perform a variety of tasks. These include putting on shoes, walking, picking items off shelves, folding clothes and more, achieving success rates of 60% to 100% in these activities based on up to 40 demonstrations.

Despite its advanced technology, the cost of HumanPlus is considerable, estimated at $107,945. However, its versatility suggests that it could be a valuable investment, especially in specific applications requiring adaptability and efficiency.

Technical details of HumanPlus

Based on Unitree’s Unitree H1 model model and equipped with Inspire-Robots together with customized dolls, HumanPlus stands at a height of 1.75 meters. This robot has a hand with six degrees of freedom, allowing complex movements. Each finger, except the thumb which has two degrees, has one degree of freedom.

In addition, the robot’s wrist can rotate in one plane, facilitating movements in various directions. With 33 degrees of freedom in total and two RGB webcams in its head, the robot can handle objects with a force of up to 10 Newtons and support a load of up to 16.5 pounds in its arms, while its legs can generate a torque of up to 360 Newton-meters.

Collaborative initiatives

One of the highlights of HumanPlus is its open source nature. The researchers have shared their work in a GitHub repository, thus promoting collaboration and continued development by others interested in the robotics.
