ShipFC H2020 project receives preliminary approval of the ammonia fuel system design from the Norwegian Maritime Authority. This innovative system, developed by a consortium led by NCE Maritime CleanTech, aims to equip an offshore vessel with a 2 MW ammonia fuel cell, enabling clean navigation for up to 3,000 hours per year.
The design of the ammonia fuel system
The main objective of the ShipFC project is to modernize the offshore vessel Viking Energy, owned by Eidesvik and contracted by Equinor, to operate with ammonia, an emission-free fuel . This initiative accelerates decarbonization and the search for sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels in shipping.
The installation of the ammonia fuel cell on the Viking Energy enables a remarkable improvement in the vessels, because this innovative technology improves performance in shipping. The project also seeks to expand the capacity of the fuel cell from 100 kW to 2 MW and to evaluate its potential for application on other types of vessels, such as offshore construction vessels and cargo ships.
The ShipFC project has received EUR 10 million in funding from the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Joint Undertaking (FCH JU). In addition, Eidesvik has signed a memorandum of understanding with Aker BP and Alma to explore the installation of ammonia fuel cell technology on two additional vessels.
