EXMAR celebrates completion of its first LPG and ammonia powered transport vessel

South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Mipo, has begun construction of the first of six medium-sized LPG/ammonia carriers with a capacity of 46,000 cubic meters, ordered by EXMAR LPG.

The first two vessels in this series will be equipped with LPG dual-fuel engines, while the remaining four vessels will use ammonia as fuel. will use ammonia as fuel. These gas carriers will be the first ocean-going vessels to incorporate dual-fuel engines capable of running on ammonia, supplied by the Swiss company WinGD. In addition, Finnish technology group Wärtsilä will provide the cargo handling and fuel supply systems for the ammonia-powered vessels.

These innovative vessels, which will be 190 meters long, 30.4 meters wide and 18.8 meters high, will be delivered to EXMAR on a staggered basis until May 2026. The choice of ammonia as a fuel reflects the maritime industry’s commitment to the stringent environmental regulations of the International Maritime Organization(IMO).

The use of ammonia is one of the most promising solutions for the long-term decarbonization of the maritime industry because it does not emit carbon dioxide when burned. This initiative positions EXMAR and HD Hyundai Mipo in the quest for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and the complete elimination of carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.
