Norwegian startup Nofence has developed a virtual fencing system that transforms the way farmers manage their pastures and herds. With this system, users can control their pastures and animals at any time and from anywhere, saving time and money by avoiding the construction and maintenance of physical fences.

What is virtual fencing and how does it work?

Virtual fences, a relatively recent technology, allow ranchers to manage the distribution of livestock on grazing land without the need for physical fences. The cattle wear GPS-equipped collars and communicators that interface with receiver towers to establish a virtual fence designed by the rancher or land manager.

When the limit of this virtual fence is reached, the collar emits auditory stimuli (a series of loud beeps). If cattle continue to advance beyond the limit, they receive a harmless shock. It has been found that cattle can quickly learn the signals from the virtual fence, eventually responding only to the auditory warning. Several studies have demonstrated the success of this system also with sheep and goats.

Using the Nofence application, farmers can provide their animals with access to lush pastures without having to install physical fences. This not only optimizes time and resources, but also allows the creation, modification and removal of grazing enclosures and exclusion zones directly from a cell phone.

One of the most outstanding features of Nofence is the ability to monitor the location of each animal in real time. The application sends notifications to the cell phone in case of any unforeseen events, making it easier than ever to locate, monitor and care for livestock.

How does the Nofence system work?

The operation of Nofence is simple and effective. Users must download the application, define the grazing enclosure, place a collar on each adult animal and teach them to respond to the audible warnings. From there, farmers can easily monitor their animals from the application.

This innovative system promises a significant change in the livestock sector, providing a more efficient and sustainable solution for pasture and herd management. With Nofence’s technology, farmers can improve their resource management management of their resources and ensure the welfare of their animals more efficiently.
