TECO 2030, BLOM Maritime and Samskip were awarded an ENOVA grant to upgrade Samskip’s LNG carrier Kvitnos, incorporating fuel cells and using hydrogen as fuel.
Kvitnos to be one of the ships with hydrogen cells
The project will focus on preparing the investment decision for the modernization of the Kvitnos, while facilitating long-term hydrogen fuel supply contracts, thanks to the vessel’s fixed route.
BLOM Maritime will provide engineering support for the development of the documentation required for preliminary approval of the fuel cell and hydrogen solution.
Samskip, for its part, already has a hydrogen-powered container ship under construction as part of the SeaShuttle project. This new modernization initiative with the Kvitnos could become the company’s second hydrogen project.
“With the delivery of our LNG-powered multipurpose vessels in 2015, Samskip already offered one of the most environmentally friendly cargo ships in the world, eliminating SOx emissions and drastically reducing NOx and CO₂ emissions,” said Are Grathen, regional director of Samskip Norway and Sweden.“With this grant from Enova and in close cooperation with fuel cell supplier TECO, we take an important step towards the total decarbonization of our operations.”
Decarbonization of the maritime sector
The main objective of the project is to transform the Kvitnos, which currently operates between Rotterdam (Netherlands) and the Norwegian coast as far as Hammerfest, into a zero-emission vessel by adopting hydrogen technology.
“Our fuel cell technology represents an excellent option for modernizing the existing fleet, allowing them to operate with sustainable propulsion along the coast,” said Tore Enger, CEO of TECO Group.
