Rosslare Europort opens its planning to enhance offshore wind energy

The proposed ORE center in the Irish port is designed to support the growing offshore wind sector.

Rosslare Europort has begun preparations to submit a planning application for the modernization that would establish the first offshore renewable energy (ORE) facility in Ireland. This port plans to submit the application along with an environmental impact assessment report(EIAR) to the Irish authorities next fall.

Planning the Rosslare Europort

First, work on the EIAR is already underway and, on May 29, the port opened a public consultation on the project. This consultation process allows citizens and stakeholders to offer their opinions and concerns regarding the proposed project.

For the environmental impact assessment, Iarnród Éireann, owner and operator of Rosslare Europort, appointed the firms Nicholas O’Dwyer and Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions in August 2023. These companies are in charge of developing the detailed report that will evaluate all possible environmental effects of the modernization.

NASH Maritime will be responsible for conducting the navigational risk assessment and preparing the NAR technical report. NAR technical report technical report, which will be included as an appendix to the EIAR. He/she will also draft the shipping and shipping chapter of the report, ensuring that all maritime aspects are adequately covered.

The renewable energy project

The proposed ORE center in the Irish port is designed to support the growing offshore wind sector. offshore wind sector and contribute to the country’s development and achievement of its primary goal of generating 7 GW of wind power capacity.

Plans to transform the port into a marine renewable energy hub were unveiled in 2022. During that year, the port’s management also announced that the investment required to carry out the project is estimated at more than US$218 million.
