With the legal issues now resolved, ONE-Dyas, an exploration and production company based in the Netherlands, is moving quickly to bring its offshore wind-powered gas platform in the North Seawith an expected operation date for the end of this year.
In August 2017, ONE-Dyas discovered the N05-A field, located partly in the Dutch North Sea and partly in the German North Sea. After receiving final permits for the N05-A gas project in June 2022, the company and its partners, Hansa Hydrocarbons and EBN, made a final investment decision in September 2022, announcing an investment of more than €500 million to develop the field.
Dutch court upholds permits for gas platform
The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy granted the necessary permits for the development of N05-A gas. However, several parties filed lawsuits against this decision. On April 18, 2024, the court affirmed the decisions related to the extraction of natural gas from the natural gas extraction the construction of the gas pipeline and the electric cable.
In addition, the court indicated that the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, in consultation with the Minister of Nature and Nitrogen, should correct certain defects in the environmental permit. This decision is now available for public review.
On the other hand, Johannes Alexander ‘Hans’ Vijlbrief, Dutch State Secretary, justified the decision by stressing that the immediate entry into force is crucial for the security of natural gas supply. natural gas . According to Vijlbrief, locally produced gas has a significantly lower level of greenhouse gas emissions than imported gas.
Gas and wind energy in the North Sea
The N05-A gas extraction platform will be electrified with wind power from a nearby wind farm, which will further reduce emissions to near zero during the production phase. Despite climate ambitions to reduce the use of natural gas as quickly as possible, Vijlbrief stressed that there will still be a need for gas in the energy supply for some time while the energy transition is completed.
Finally, with all permits re-validated, ONE-Dyas announced that work can continue without interruption. Contracted companies are accelerating final work in the North Sea to ensure that first natural gas is available to homes and businesses by the end of 2024.
A HSM Offshore Energy has been commissioned to build the N05-A gas production platform at its shipyard in Schiedam. The company completed deployment of the upper part of the N05-A platform in April 2024, just two days after the lower section of the structure was installed.
