China’s first heavy-duty hydrogen railway station for commercial and industrial trains was inaugurated on Sunday, June 2, in the city of Ordos, located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The first hydrogen railway station
The Batuta hydrogen station, managed by CHN Energy Investment Group, is designed to supply heavy shunting locomotives and catenary work vehicles. These are powered by hydrogen fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries.
In addition, it has the capacity to refuel 500 kilograms of hydrogen per day and up to 800 kilograms in hydrogen storage. The filling process of a hydrogen locomotive hydrogen locomotive takes takes approximately 30 minutes.
In addition, this station is equipped with the world’s first automatic hydrogen refueling robot, resistant to low temperatures and capable of operating at temperatures down to -25 degrees Celsius. This feature ensures efficient and reliable operation throughout the year.
Operational benefits
This station has great potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It is estimated that its operation will allow a reduction of approximately 800 tons of CO₂ per year, contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.
The hydrogen-powered locomotives can operate continuously for eight hours on a single charge and have an uncharged range of up to 800 kilometers.
