U.S. automaker Tesla has begun construction of a new battery factory in Shanghai for the production of its Megapack, which are energy storage batteries used to stabilize power grids and prevent power outages.

A high-capacity battery factory

First, the complex is expected to begin operations towards the end of this year. Tao Lin, vice president of Tesla, mentioned in statements to the economic news portal Yicai that this plant will become a “very important production and export base”.

In addition, Tesla’s new Shanghai facility will have an annual production capacity of approximately 10,000 units of the product, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 50,000 households. This increase in production demonstrates the company’s commitment to expanding its global capacity.

On the other hand, Tesla already operates a megafactory in Lathrop, California, where it produces around 10,000 batteries annually, with a total storage of approximately 40 gigawatt hours (GWh). Each Megapack manufactured by Tesla can store more than 3 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy, enough to power 3,600 homes for one hour, according to the company’s website.

The impact of Tesla’s gigafactory in Shanghai.

Likewise, in 2019, the company opened its first gigafactory outside the United States in Shanghai. In 2023, this plant produced about 947,000 vehicles, which accounted for more than half of Tesla’s global sales, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Finally, from 2019, Tesla has increased its investment in the Lingang Free Trade Zone in Shanghai, where its operations are located. In addition to expanding production at its gigafactory, Tesla has built additional facilities, including a production plant for its superchargers for electric vehicles

In addition to its advances in battery battery and electric vehicle and electric vehicles, Tesla has also innovated in the creation of solar home charging technology. Such technology, combined with its storage batteries, could revolutionize the way households manage and use energy, making possible a future with less reliance on conventional power grids.
