Johnson Matthey(JM) has been selected by HIF Global, the leading company in eFuels production, as the main supplier of e-methanol technology for the Paysandú eFuels project in Uruguay.

The future of e-methanol technology

This project aims to become the largest e-methanol plant in South America, using electrolytic (green) hydrogen and residual CO₂ from an ethanol plant to produce e-methanol. This technology allows the production of a fuel with less impact on the carbon footprint compared to traditional methanol, thanks to the use of renewable raw materials.

In addition, JM’s eMERALD e-methanol technology has been established as a reliable way to decarbonize methanol production. This technology will be applied at the HIF Paysandú eFuels facility, with an estimated production capacity of 700,000 tons of e-methanol per year. This environmentally friendly fuel will supply the growing demand of the maritime sector, while serving as feedstock for the production of e-gasoline.

For more than 12 months, the plant has been operating efficiently, producing methanol that is subsequently converted into gasoline. This success has cemented the relationship between JM and HIF Global, strengthening their partnership for future projects.

The Paysandú plant

HIF Global has unveiled plans for new eFuels projects in the United States, Tasmania and Chile. Johnson Matthey is collaborating with HIF Global in the development of these projects, which promise to further expand the production of sustainable fuels globally.

The investment in the Paysandú plant amounts to US$4 billion, making it the largest investment in the history of Uruguay. Construction of the plant is expected to begin in 2025, creating approximately 1,500 jobs during this phase, in addition to 300 permanent operational positions once the plant is operational.

In this regard, Alberto Giovanzana, General Manager of CT Licensing at Johnson Matthey, said: “The market for sustainable methanol fuels is rapidly expanding and offers a crucial solution for the decarbonization of shipping, land transportation and other industries. As a leading global supplier of catalysts and methanol synthesis technology, JM has extensive experience in the methanol industry. We are excited to continue our collaboration with HIF to offer our e-methanol technology in this exciting project.

HIF Latam’s vision

Victor Turpaud, CEO of HIF Latam, commented:“eFuels are an essential substitute for fossil fuels and represent an essential solution for the decarbonization of global transportation.

In addition, we have demonstrated our ability to produce eFuels using green hydrogen and recycled CO₂, thanks to Johnson Matthey’s technology at our Haru Oni eFuels facility in southern Chile. Expanding our collaboration with Johnson Matthey underscores the importance of long-term relationships for HIF and for achieving our common goals.
