Uriel Renovables inaugurated a hybrid plant (solar and biogas) in Seville that will reach a total capacity of 3 MW. Currently, the first megawatt has been activated and it is anticipated that the remaining 2 will be operational next fall.
At this initial stage, the facility will produce 2,050 MWh of electricity annually and this figure is projected to increase to 6,365 MWh with the commissioning of the second phase, which is still under construction.
Spain advances with a hybrid plant
This project integrates energy production from landfill biogas with solar generation at previously closed landfill sites, representing a pioneering undertaking in Spain due to the fusion of these two renewable energy technologies.
The first 1 MW hybrid biogas and photovoltaic installation is located at the Montemarta Cónica Comprehensive Urban Solid Waste Treatment Center, located in Alcalá de Guadaíra.
The project involves an investment of 3 million euros and constitutes the first example in Andalusia of hybridization of biogas and photovoltaic technologies. Electrical disposal infrastructure was previously used exclusively for energy derived from landfill biogas.
Optimization through photovoltaic modules
With the installation of photovoltaic modules in already closed discharge areas, the use of the capacity of the electrical network will be optimized and land that was previously dedicated to waste disposal will be valued, thus closing the production cycle, as reported in a statement by the Spanish company.
The project has been promoted by Energía Sur de Europa, a subsidiary specialized in the valorization of landfill biogas and is recognized for its pioneering nature in Spain in the integration of these renewable energy sources. Uriel Renovables has developed more than 600 MW of green energy throughout its more than 30 years of experience and maintains a portfolio of 1,300 MW in various technologies, including solar, wind, hydraulic, biogas and battery storage. Its presence extends to Europe, the United States and Latin America.
