The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has launched a digital platform dedicated to providing details on low-carbon marine fuels and technologies, including cost data and the latest findings in the field.

This online resource has been created under the initiative of the Future Fuels and Technologies Project (FFT Project), a collaboration between IMO and the Republic of Korea, aimed at promoting the establishment of new regulations under IMO’s Net Zero strategy to achieve the targets set out in IMO’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Strategy by 2023.

About the IMO web portal

The portal offers different sections including:

  • Updated data on alternative fuels, benchmark prices, details on the organization’s Data Collection System (DCS).
  • Future outlook with information on the feasibility, scale-up and sustainability of new marine fuels and technologies, fuel price forecasts, research and development initiatives.
  • Demonstration projects; news and events related to the reduction of GHG emissions in international shipping, as well as training resources and tools on alternative fuels and measures to reduce GHG emissions.

OMI at the forefront of technological innovation

IMO stresses the crucial importance of technological innovation and global accessibility of zero or near-zero GHG emission technologies and fuels for international shipping in order to meet the ambitious GHG Strategy.

Among the collaborators and information providers of the website of Future Fuels to date include entities such as the Ammonia Energy Association, Argus Media, DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight, IAPH, Ipieca, the Korea Maritime Cooperation Center, the Methanol Institute, OECD, SEA-LNG, SGMF, the Zero Emissions Shipping Mission and ZESTA, along with the IMO partnership projects GHG-SMART, GreenVoyage 2050 and Next-GEN.

This compendium of information gathers input from a wide range of stakeholders and data providers who have joined the initiative in its early stages, inviting other collaborators to join this collective effort. The FFT Project’s web portal is oriented to improving access to relevant information for those involved in climate change discussions under the auspices of the organization, thereby promoting the exchange of relevant data without implying an endorsement or position on the part of IMO with respect to the data or its sources.

Beyond its role as a source of information, this website represents a virtual meeting point for innovators, researchers and industry professionals to explore emerging solutions and establish collaborations that will accelerate the transition to cleaner and more sustainable shipping.

The web portal can be found at Futurefuels.imo.org.
