They successfully completed the presentation of their innovative GITAI USA dual-axis autonomous robotic arm system, known as S2, which extends to 1.5 meters.

This technology was tested outside the International Space Station (ISS), highlighting its ability to perform complex tasks in the vacuum of space.

A demonstration of GITAI’s important robotic arm.

This GITAI project seeks to offer comprehensive services for satellites in geostationary orbit (GEO) and low earth orbit (LEO). This spectrum of services includes activities such as approach and docking, inspection, de-orbiting and life extension of satellites. In this context, the company has plans to design robotic satellites that can perform tasks autonomously, with plans to implement orbital servicing solutions by 2026.

The experiment conducted on the ISS consisted of the S2 system executing a variety of in-space servicing, assembly and manufacturing (ISAM) operations from the ISS Bishop airlock. Although the initial objectives were met, GITAI intends to conduct additional reliability tests in the next five months to confirm the efficiency of the system.

This project has enabled the S2 system to achieve NASA Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL), which indicates its operational suitability in the space environment. This level is indicative of the capability of GITAI ‘s technology to be applied in real space missions. The design of S2 has informed the development of another GITAI system, the industrious and efficient robotic arm.
