The National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) gave the green light to Pemex Exploración y Producción (PEP) to drill the Yawa-1EXP exploratory well, marking a significant step forward in hydrocarbon exploration in Mexico.
Pemex project to drill the exploratory well Yawa-1EXP
This drilling project, to be carried out in the municipality of Tihuatlán, Veracruz, about 9.5 km northeast of Poza Rica, is part of a modification to the exploration plan for block AE-0182-M-WAYA. The initiative seeks to explore potential hydrocarbon accumulations in specific geological formations in the region.
The Yawa-101EXP well has as its main goal the identification of new hydrocarbon reserves. hydrocarbon reserves in the in the calcareous breccias of the Tamabra Formation, belonging to the Middle Cretaceous. The strategy includes J-type directional drilling to reach a depth ranging from 2,147 to 2,547 vertical meters.
Within the preliminary work scheme, Pemex PEP has scheduled a series of conventional production tests to evaluate the potential of the target reservoir. The predominant hydrocarbon in this area is expected to be oil, with an estimated prospective volume of 4.7 million barrels of crude oil equivalent and a 43% probability of geological success.
The drilling and completion schedule for the well contemplates a total of 64 working daysdistributed in 35 days for the drilling phase, which will extend from April 22 to May 26, 2024, and 29 days to completionfrom June 16 to July 14 of the same year. The total budget allocated for this project amounts to US$9 million, with US$6.1 million for drilling and US$2.9 million for completion.
The exploration of new wells such as Yawa-1EXP underscores Pemex’s continued quest to strengthen hydrocarbon production in Mexico at a crucial time for the national energy industry. This project not only has the potential to increase the country’s oil reserves, but also demonstrates the commitment to technological development and innovation in oil exploration, key elements to ensure Mexico’s energy self-sufficiency in the future.
