The start-up of Everfuel’s 20MW HySynergy 1 electrolyzer has been postponed due to a quality issue detected in the high pressure connections within the high pressure auxiliary system.
About the Everfuel Electrolyzer
Everfuel has reported that, although the main electrolyzer facility is ready for commissioning, it failed a test on February 29, 2024. This has led to the need for on-site reconstruction, delaying completion of the facility until the middle of the second quarter of 2024.
The company experienced quality problems with the high-pressure connections in the Nel-supplied alkaline electrolyzer deoxidizer, which is essential for removing oxygen and moisture from the hydrogen stream as part of the high-pressure auxiliary system.
Everfuel has also indicated that the affected unit is part of the delivery package from the electrolyzer supplier. Despite this setback, the company will continue with the start-up of other high-pressure systems that are not affected by the deoxidizer problem.
The HySynergy project is planned to expand in two subsequent phases to 200MW and 1GW in 2025 and 2030, respectively. Everfuel has reported that it has not yet decided on the electrolyzer supplier for the next phases.
This news comes after Everfuel reported its decision to dismantle unprofitable legacy hydrogen refueling stations to focus its efforts on green hydrogen production.
Strengthening the transition to green hydrogen
The delay in the start-up of Everfuel’s electrolyzer project underscores the technical and quality challenges facing the green hydrogen industry as it moves toward scalability and efficiency. However, this setback also highlights the industry’s commitment to quality and safety standards, essential to the long-term success of the energy transition.
As Everfuel and other industry players overcome these hurdles, the way is paved for a more robust and sustainable hydrogen infrastructure, crucial to achieving global decarbonization goals.
